Remember

If at all possible, wait for your child to be able to provide full consent for irreversible measures and do not undertake these without age appropriate explanation to your child.

When it comes to treatments, whether they be hormonal or surgical, take enough time in advance to understand and plan your child’s next steps. Only very few interventions are urgent.

Do not allow doctors who have no experience in the field of DSD to provide care relating to your child’s DSD. Always ask for referral to a specialized multidisciplinary team.

Feel free to ask for counselling if you encounter issues you feel you cannot handle all by yourself.

You and your child might need persons outside the family who know about the diagnosis and can give support.
