Institute Presentation

VU University Medical Center is the second largest university medical center of the region Amsterdam and traditionally pursues multidisciplinary approaches for patients in need for complex health care. An experienced team with participants from the departments of Genetics, Medicinal Psychology, (pediatric) Psychiatry, (pediatric) Endocrinology, Gynaecology, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Laboratory Medicine etc. work closely together in the care for DSD patients. Our institution follows 100 patients/year with DSD.

P.T. Cohen-Kettenis, medical psychologist, is co-director (responsible for mental health care) of the Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria of the VUmc and responsible for the diagnostics, psychological treatment, counselling and research in the field of gender dysphoria / gender incongruence and DSD. The VUmc center collaborates in research with centers in Belgium, Norway, Germany, and Italy in the area of adult gender incongruence (European Network of the Investigation on Gender Incongruence (ENIGI network) and with additional centers in the UK, Finland on gender incongruence in adolescents. Cohen-Kettenis is psychologist of the VUmc DSD team and participates in the Dutch network on DSD. In the past years, Cohen-Kettenis participated in the guidelines development of the European and American Societies for Pediatric Endocrinology for the clinical management of Disorders of Sex Development, the Standards of Care for Gender Identity Disorder of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, and the Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guideline on the treatment of transsexuals. She is the chair of the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5 subwork group on Gender Identity Disorders. She is a member of the World Health Organization’s ICD-11 working group on Sexual Disorders and Sexual Health. Annelou L.C. de Vries, MD PhD, child psychiatrist, coordinates clinical care and research in the area of gender incongruence in adolescents and is the child psychiatrist of the VUmc DSD team. She coordinates an international study on gender dysphoric adolescents. M. van Trotsenburg MD PhD, gynaecologist and obstetrician, is co-director (responsible for the multidisciplinary medical care) of the Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria. He is the gynaecologist of the VUmc DSD team and he is involved in the endocrine part of the ENIGI network and also in the Dutch DSD network. Goedele M.A. Beckers MD, pediatric urologist (FEAPU) is a member of the multidisciplinary Vumc DSD team. Joost Rotteveel, MD PhD, is head of pediatric endocrinology, vice head of general pediatrics and chair of the reguler DSD team of the VU university medical center.
