Institute Presentation

Charité Universitätsmedizin is one of the largest university hospitals in Europe with 7000 students per year. The Charité was founded in 1710, it is now part of both, the Humboldt and Free University Berlin and is located at 4 campuses. The Charité is the biggest tertiary referral centre in Germany with more than 590 000 inpatients and 130 000 outpatiens per year Moreover, Charité holds 2 Clusters of Excellence, 2 Graduate Schools, 14 Collaborative Research Areas, 7 Research Groups, 4 Clinical Research Groups, 3 Doctoral Programs, 4 Additional DFG-Initiatives and 90 EU projects (6th FP, 7th FP).

The Otto Heubner Centrum for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine of the Charité harbours the largest out-patient clinic of Paediatric Endocrinology in Germany. Treatment and care of children and adolescents with all chronic endocrine disorders is provided in a multiprofessional manner covering all special needs of families having children with a chronic disease in the interdisciplinary Social Paediatric Centre (SPZ) of the hospital. Moreover, the Otto Heubner Centrum harbours one of the National Centres of Rare Diseases.

The SPZ of the Otto Heubner Centrum together with the Institute of Experimental Pediatric Endocrinology of the Charité have a longstanding experience in clinical management and basic research of patients with DSD. In the out-patient clinics, 400-500 patients/year with disorders of sex development (DSD) are seen. The multidisciplinary DSD team of the Charité offers all specialties for management of DSD such as Paediatric Endocrinology, Psychology, Social Work, Surgery, Gynecology, Urology, Sexual Medicine, Genetics and Endocrinology. The main fields of research are genetics and long-term outcome of DSD.

Dr. Köhler, the coordinator of the project, leads the multidisciplinary DSD team and is part of the pediatric  GID team (gender identity disorders) of the Charité. She is an active member of the German DSD network. She participated in the clinical outcome project and basic science projects investigating the genetic causes of DSD in the German DSD network study (German Ministery of Education and Research, BMBF, 2004-2008). She holds various European collaborations (University College London; Montpellier University Hospital Centre, Hôpital Necker-Enfants malades, Paris; University of Birmingham, UK; University of Zurich, Switzerland; National Research Centre Cairo, Egypt). Furthermore, she contributed to the development of the German clinical guidelines for management of DSD (AWMF).
